What if both the best and worst are the same place?
For example, visit a top-ranked city for singles to meet and you’ll meet plenty of individuals who are incredibly lonely and afraid they will never meet their match. Meanwhile, there are weddings every weekend even in the cities where finding a spouse is supposedly difficult.
The truth is happiness has nothing to do with environment. Happiness is about making peace with who you are, not where you are.
It’s easy to examine your surroundings and imagine a more fulfilling life for yourself somewhere else. Moving to a new city will produce an initial adrenaline rush. But once you’ve settled in, your happiness will still be entirely up to you.
Have you ever asked God for a change in your life, and two years later, you’re asking God to get rid of it?
I like this Sun Ra quote. “Heaven is where you’ll be when you are okay right where you are.”
You were created to thrive everywhere because you were made by God and God is everywhere. No matter where you were born, you were made to soar, to shine, to live a life filled with joy, love, abundance, and peace. Happiness is your birthright. You are still you no matter where you are.
So what about the times when you don’t feel happy?
Happiness is not an emotional state. It is a moment-by-moment choice. When you feel unhappy, chances are you are feeling fear. More happiness means letting go of fear. Detach yourself from your fearful thoughts. Your goal is not to change yourself as it is to change your mind about yourself.
As Robert Holden asks in “Shift Happens,” can you accept the possibility that if something is missing in your life, it is more of the real you?
“Much of our happiness is our response to our inner call for joy,” Holden writes.
Answering the inner call often means hanging up on the fear that is getting in the way of our happiness.
What fear will you let go of today?
Release the fear and experience more of the real you.
