Hearing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” for the umpteenth time earlier today motivated me to seek out some cool tunes that have that holiday spirit uplift but are not the same-old same-old playing nonstop everywhere. Consider adding these 7 songs to your own alternative playlist.
This is one in an occasional series offering up inspirational musical favorites, each time with a new theme. Check out all the installments here.
1. Dan Croll, “Home”
Memories bubble up for me whenever I head home for the holidays, as Croll croons.
2. Oh Honey, “Be Okay” acoustic version
Chances are someone will wish you “Happy Holidays” even when you’re feeling blue. This song is musical happiness made real.
3. Noah Gunderson, “Ledges”
Let’s not kid ourselves that our moods will stay up all season. Family, spending and social pressures mixed with end-of-year self-reflection can spark anxiety and trauma. It takes commitment to back away from the “ledges” we’re on when we’re feeling especially fragile.
4. Rhodes, “Run”
Catching up with far-flung family and friends is a common holiday trend. Why do we ever run from each other at all?
5. Lee Brice, “I Don’t Dance”
Another popular Christmas-time going-on is to propose to your sweetie under the mistletoe, either before or after a couple cups of spiked egg nog. Here Brice sings about why to get down on that knee.
6. Tom Odell, “Grow Old With Me”
This inspired genius video recalling teen love is the perfect visual companion for Odell’s take on the marriage proposal thing.
7. Tom Odell, “Hold Me”
Lest we forget about the season’s spiritual side, Odell here makes a passionate plea for the love he needs. The gospel choir conjures up the miraculous in this acoustic version of Odell’s pop hit recorded live at a fashion show for Burberry.
